Short Bio

May is a prelicensed professional who works with adults, centering intersectional identities in her work, and is committed to honoring the complexities that they hold within a white-centered, patriarchal society. Despite the seriousness of this mission, she is quick to find humor in all things and, through experience, uses it as a tool to explore injustice, emotions, and even trauma. She is trauma-informed and uses a client-centered approach that prioritizes the strength of the therapeutic relationship as a route to emotional tolerance and positive change.

Clinical Approach

I use a blend of styles to support a psychodynamic foundation. Primarily, I draw from DBT, ACT, IFS, and EMDR techniques to uncover emotions, foundational memories, and the “why” behind core beliefs.

Who I Work With

I work with adults (18+) who feel ready to dive into their emotional life. I specialize in LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, couples (traditional and ENM), and folks who are neurodivergent.

Training and Credentials

I am currently a pre-licensed professional with a degree in Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University. I am Gottman I (soon to be II) certified and have completed EMDR training.

My Why

If I were to sum up my “mission” in life, it’s to help others. Initially, I did this with nearly a decade of work in social justice spaces, in capacities such as digital organizing, communications, and narrative building. Through my own therapeutic journey, I realized that counseling is something that I have a knack for, and it’s a career path that aligns with my values.

Treatment Philosophy

The core of my treatment philosophy is rooted in the therapeutic relationship. When there is mutual trust between client and clinician, that’s where change really begins. I also value humor both within the therapeutic process and in daily life. There’s a lot to laugh at, even amid deep sadness, and I enjoy harnessing the power of humor to assist in the coping process.

What to Expect

Initially, for the first 4-6 weeks of therapy, I prioritize building the therapeutic relationship, the foundation on which more difficult work can begin. During that time, I will utilize more concrete tools and techniques from DBT, ACT, and CBT so that clients have ways to identify and cope with difficult thoughts and feelings. Next, I integrate IFS, where we get to know those parts more intimately.

Creating Inclusive Space

Advancing racial and social justice is a core part of who I am. I have done a lot of work in processing and becoming more comfortable with my whiteness, particularly when working with and for historically marginalized communities. Systemic oppression is a type of trauma, whether it is based on one’s race, gender, sexuality, class, neurodivergence, or intersections thereof. As a neurodivergent person myself, I can empathize with others who are trying to function in a world that was not built for them, and I carry this awareness into all aspects of my life and relationships.

Beyond Therapy

Beyond long walks on the beach and getting caught in the rain, I am often cooking, eating, or thinking about what I am going to eat next. I also love to get lost in works of fiction, spending time with my loved ones, and starting a new farm in Stardew Valley despite having plenty of other games on my Switch to play. I can typically be found laughing or favoriting items on Depop that I will likely never buy.
