How We Match You With the Right Therapist (Behind the Scenes)

The hardest part of starting therapy often comes before therapy begins. You scroll through profiles that blur together, and underneath the scrolling sits one fear: what if I pick wrong, sit through four sessions with someone who is not right, and have to start the search over? That fear keeps a lot of people overwhelmed and hesitant to get started. Here is what happens on our end once you reach out, so choosing well is not something you have to do alone.

What happens after you reach out, step by step

  • You reach out through the contact form or by phone, with as much or as little detail as you want to share.

  • We have a brief consultation, usually about 15 minutes, to understand what is bringing you in, what you have tried, and what you want to feel different.

  • We match you to the clinician whose specialty, style, and availability fit what you described.

  • You have a first session, which is mostly history and goals.

  • We check in on fit after the first few sessions, because the right match is something you confirm by experiencing it, not by reading a bio.

How we decide who you see

Several things at once. The specialty the work calls for, whether that is EMDR, trauma, anxiety and depression, couples and relationships, or identity and life transitions. Personal style, because the same approach lands differently depending on who delivers it, and some people want warmth and directness while others want a quieter, more reflective presence. The practical factors that decide whether you keep going, like scheduling and whether you prefer Midtown in person or secure video. And identity, background, and clinical experience considerations that may help the fit feel easier sooner.

Why a group practice can match you better than a solo search

When you find a solo therapist on your own and it turns out not to fit, you are back at the start, retelling your history to a stranger. Inside a group practice, a poor fit is recoverable. We can move you to a different clinician here without you starting from zero, because we already know what you are looking for. That is the practical advantage of being matched rather than searching alone.

If it is not the right fit

Sometimes the best clinician for you is not one of ours. If what you need sits outside what we do well, we say so and help you find it elsewhere. And if the fit within the practice is off, raise it. We would rather adjust early than have you stay in a fit that is not helping.

Common mistakes people make choosing a therapist

  • Filtering only by who is closest or in-network, and ignoring specialty fit.

  • Booking the first available clinician rather than the right one for the issue.

  • Staying with a poor fit out of dread at starting over.

What to expect in your first few sessions

Early sessions are for history and goals, and for both of you to get a feel for working together. Fit usually becomes clear around the third or fourth session. It is completely appropriate to name it directly if something feels off, and a good therapist welcomes that conversation.

FAQ

How does matching work?

A short consultation, then a match based on specialty, style, and logistics. You are not dropped into a directory to fend for yourself.

Can I request a specific clinician?

Yes. If someone's profile or specialty stands out, tell us and we will factor it in.

What if my therapist is not the right fit?

Raise it. We can re-match you within the practice or, if needed, refer you out.

How soon can I be seen?

It depends on current openings and the fit you are looking for. When you reach out, we will tell you who has availability and the soonest we can get you in.

If the fear of choosing wrong has kept you from starting, that is the part we help with. Start with a short conversation.
